Emperor Concerto on DVD

This made-for-DVD performance of Beethoven’s iconic “Emperor” piano concerto won the International DVD Association’s award for Music Excellence in 2005. It features Australia’s leading Beethoven interpreter Gerard Willems playing an Australian-designed Stuart & Sons Piano with Sinfonia Australis conducted by Antony Walker. Unlike other video productions that are either television ‘live’ recordings, or mimed to a pre-recorded soundtrack, filming of this performance took place during the actual recording sessions for the Emperor CD (“Complete Beethoven Concertos” – ABC Classics). As a result we the audience are taken out of the stalls and onto the stage to experience every note of emotion and excitement as the drama of the music unfolds before us in thrilling close-up.

Reviews

“It’s intimate but also generates a sense of excitement you wouldn’t expect from this kind of musical performance.”

Greg Hassall, Sydney Morning Herald

“Is it the best alternative to the live concert? Unquestionably and emphatically yes.”

David Vivian Russell, Limelight

“The thing that sets the Emperor film apart is its verve and clarity.”

Diana Simmonds, The Sunday Telegraph

“This is a thoughtful and lovingly put together package that makes full use of the new medium.”

Andrew Fraser, MAG (Music Australia Guide)

“The Gerard Willems revealed in this DVD, with his programmatic commentary on the concerto... who winks at conductor Antony Walker at the conclusion of the first movement, and who, in the supplementary material, conducts a master class for young students, seems relaxed, easy-going, free of self-importance and thoroughly likeable.”

Russell Lichter, Stereo Times (USA)
